5S
Run a first 5S project on a workstation or a line, from sorting out unnecessary items to the sustaining audit, without falling back into disorder three months later.

An operator spends four minutes looking for a 13 mm spanner, three times per shift. A trolley has been blocking the aisle ever since someone "put it there for now". Nobody knows whether the bin of parts under the bench is still used. 5S is the method that fixes this kind of situation, in five structured steps, and above all that stops it from coming back.
This course is aimed at team leaders, shop floor managers, methods technicians and continuous improvement facilitators who want to launch a first 5S project on a small perimeter: a workstation, a line, a tool store. By the end, you will know how to prepare the project (perimeter, area owner, measurable objectives), run the first three S's in one day, formalise a standard that can be checked at a glance, then set up the short audit that makes the result last. Each step is backed by a figures-based shop floor example and by the most common mistake at that stage.
What you will be able to do
- Define the perimeter of a first 5S project, appoint an area owner and set two or three measurable S.M.A.R.T. before/after objectives.
- Run Seiri and Seiton: sort using red tags, decide what happens to each item, assign a fixed, visible place to what remains.
- Run Seiso as an inspection: clean in order to detect leaks, play and wear, and remove the sources of dirt rather than cleaning more often.
- Formalise a Seiketsu standard that fits on one sheet with a reference photo, making any deviation visible in under thirty seconds.
- Set up Shitsuke: a short audit grid, a frequency, a display of scores and a rule for handling deviations.
- Recognise the four most common causes of 5S failure (one-off big clean-up, imposed from above, standards too heavy, lack of facilitation) and know how to avoid them.
The path
- What 5S fixes, and where to start 4 min
- Seiri: sorting with red tags 4 min
- Seiton: a place for everything, visible from a distance 4 min
- Seiso: clean to inspect, then eliminate the source 3 min
- Seiketsu: a standard that fits on one sheet 4 min
- Shitsuke: the short audit that prevents backsliding 3 min
Prerequisites
No Lean prerequisites. Working in or supervising production, and having a workstation or area on which you are allowed to act. A camera (phone) and half a day to block out for the first project.
The closing quiz
The topic ends with a 7-question quiz, and a certificate is issued on success.
